FPGA-based ASIC prototyping

Considering price-to-market issues and the posibility of ASIC design bugs, FPGA-based prototyping has become an important reference before designs are taped out. System descriptions can be implemented using abstract models in System-Verilog or System-C which puts the designer(s) in a level higher than initial RTL approaches.

Red River Rivalry!

The upcoming Saturday will bring us one of the most exciting games of the season. The Red River Rivalry is a tradition that started in 1900. After 1917 the game has been hosted by the city of Dallas. The Longhorns, currently ranked as 5th in the national polls, will be facing the #1 ranked Sooners. This will be the 103rd time these two teams meet.

VLSI-2 - Best University Level VLSI course

Have you noticed who won the Best University Level Computer Architecture and/or VLSI coures award in the Sun Microsystems' Community Innovation Awards Contest? Congrats to Mark and all the VLSI-2 team for their work on the OpenSPARC implementation! The team is currently working on the implementation of a 1000 series OpenRISC (OR1200) processor.

Considering the tendency that the high-tech industry, mainly the one directly related to software development, is experiencing regarding the open-sourcing philosophy, the process of the defining laws that cover such and open definition may turn to be a cumbersome task as shown by Google this week.

There are several points of views, but something that is really a perenneial gain for human development is the fact that knowledge has started to being shared/distributed in a more equalitarian manner.

40-acres Fest

The 40-acres fest will be held at the UT campus for the 15th time. Added to the long list of activities, local bands and The Roots, one of the greatest from Phili, will be present. Re-arrange your (already pretty busy) schedules and make sure you will make it (at least) to the concerts. See you there!

We are just few days (more precisely, just one month) away from finals. Scary, isn't it? Lots of things to finish, the connection to ENS PCs is slower than ever; time is not enough! However, we are in love with circuit design (or at least that is what we claimed the day we enrolled), so there are two more years to go. Just hang in there! Help will come!! (yeah, right!! Just sit there and keep waiting!!) :o)

We were waiting for UT's men basketball team to make it for the final four stage after the game against Stanford. However, it looks like the Memphis' squad was an excellent contender. As UK's Guardian Post said: "Tigers maul Longhorns to reach Final Four"
